Poppy MacDonald is the publisher and president of National Journal. Before her most recent promotion, MacDonald served as National Journal’s chief revenue officer, responsible for the business development, marketing, operations and growth strategy of National Journal’s print and digital advertising, underwritten live events, and National Journal Membership. MacDonald started at National Journal in 2011 as vice president of membership, where she converted the publication’s individual subscription model to a membership. MacDonald joined National Journal from Politico, where she served as Politico Pro’s executive director of business development. MacDonald worked at Gallup Inc., where over her four-year tenure she launched the World Poll and led the health care practice and worked for another David Bradley entity, consulting with hospitals and health systems as a director at The Advisory Board Company. MacDonald began her career serving members of Congress representing her Pacific Northwest hometown on both the Senate and House sides of Capitol Hill.

Kevin Turpin II

Kevin Turpin II is the senior vice president of strategy and operations at National Journal. Prior to his current role, Turpin led new product development, where he oversaw product research, evaluated potential partnerships, and established operational infrastructure for the new product pipeline. During his decade of experience working at National Journal, Turpin has produced successful proposals to increase profit margins, identify efficiencies in vendor relationships, and create new revenue lines for the organization. As a former associate director, Turpin built a strategic advisory group of 60 government affairs executives from Fortune 100 corporations and influential trade associations; leading to the launch of National Journal Membership. He began his career learning the Washington media market in roles ranging from account executive to manager of signature National Journal products such as The Hotline. A proud Hoya, Turpin is a graduate of Georgetown University.

Stephen G. Smith

Stephen G. Smith, who was editor of National Journal’s weekly magazine from 1996 to 1998, returned as editor in chief in December 2015. Smith is the only journalist to hold senior-level editing positions at all three American news magazines. He was editor of U.S. News & World Report, executive editor of Newsweek, and Nation editor of Time. Before returning to NJ, he spent eight years as editor of the Washington Examiner. He has also worked as a reporter at the Boston Globe and Philadelphia Inquirer and as Washington bureau chief for the Houston Chronicle. He was the founding editor of Civilization, which won a National Magazine Award for General Excellence after its first year of publication. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he lives in Washington with his wife, the biographer Sally Bedell Smith. They have three grown children.
